Malaysia Offers Financial Aid for Palestinian Students

The Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education has announced relief measures for Palestinian students pursuing their studies in the country amidst the ongoing war in Gaza and their homeland. The decision was announced in November 2023. Tuition Fee Exemption For Palestinian Students In Malaysia Over 600 Palestinian students enrolled in various public universities across Malaysia will be exempted from paying tuition fees for one academic year, effective immediately. The exemption is in response to the challenges faced by these students due to the relentless siege and violence in Gaza perpetrated by Israeli military forces. Support for Palestinians At Private Malaysian Universities For the remaining 200 Palestinian students studying in private institutions, the ministry is in discussions to encourage these institutions to implement similar tuition fee waivers. By extending the relief efforts to private universities, the government aims to provide comprehensive support to the entire Palestinian student community in the country, regardless of their institution of study. However, the ministry has not issued any directive to institutions of higher learning (IPTs) regarding showing solidarity with Palestine. According to Minister Khaled Nordin, each IPT has its own regulations, guidelines, and freedom to arrange such events. They can show sympathy or solidarity in their own way, without having to ask the ministry first. Monthly Allowances The government is considering providing monthly allowances to all 800 Palestinian students, both in public and private universities, for the duration of one year. Decision Background The total cost of these initiatives is estimated to be around RM20 million, with the exact figures to be announced soon. Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin acknowledged the disruptions to the learning conditions and financial situations of Palestinian students, who may no longer receive support from families or sponsors back home. The measures aim to ensure that the academic journeys of these students in Malaysia remain uninterrupted despite the challenging circumstances in their homeland.
